Our Story

When our amazing baker boy Roy was a young man, he was fascinated with all things Victorian, but more so tea rooms! For years tea rooms became a real muse for Roy and the dream of opening his own was simply that, a dream. This didn’t dampen Roy’s enthusiasm, every holiday with his family, if a tea room was there, you would find Roy there too. Being an avid baking enthusiast since an early age, the dream of his own tea room deepened Roy’s longing more, baking his amazing cakes, scones, meringues, tray bakes, pies and pastries, developing his skills. Highly recommended here at Cobblestones are the jewel in the crown “Roy’s Rangs” - delicious homemade meringues not to be missed.

Over the years Roy began collecting various tea room paraphernalia. Whilst you’re visiting today, take a look at our beautiful original till. The till, dated 1913, was first taken from Ongeri’s Italian coffee shop to the safety of the Ongeri family home in 1969 when the whole area was demolished to make way for more modern buildings in Barrow-in-Furness. When Esther Ongeri passed away, the house was cleared and the till was discovered under the stairs. It was then placed on eBay where it caught the eye of Roy and was subsequently rescued and restored to its beautiful former glory. You may also notice our original and still working grammar phone sat on the counter. Still perusing the Victorian scene, Roy came across the grammar phone at a local auction. Roy once again taking his time and patience to return it to its musical life. Incidentally, Cobblestones was once Kelly’s music shop, this was where Roy found the records to be played on his old/new grammar phone, so you could say they have come back home!

Roy’s baking fame has spread far and wide and in 2012 baker boy Roy appeared, on half a dozen occasions, in the Later Life magazine, a local magazine for the over 50’s available in the likes of Booths and Tesco, plus more. Upon a recent chance meeting with a life long friend, the opportunity came Roy’s way… to finally open his own tea room, for not just family and friends to enjoy Roy’s wares, but finally for the public too.
